This tournament was organised as a benchmark for VeryChess 0.2.0, the first version of the engine to support multi-threaded search. Its main purpose was to compare the new multi-thread configuration with the single-threaded VeryChess 0.1.0 and determine whether parallel search produced a measurable improvement in playing strength.
The opponents were selected to provide several reference points. Stockfish served as the top-level benchmark: although newer Stockfish versions are available, version 16 is already far stronger than every other engine in this tournament. HIARCS represented the level of a mature professional commercial engine and helped demonstrate how far VeryChess still has to progress. GreKo, Jazz, and Natwarlal were chosen because their strength was relatively close to VeryChess 0.1.0 in previous testing, making them particularly useful for identifying practical improvements.
The results show clear progress. VeryChess 0.2.0 finished fourth with 19.5 points, compared with 14 points and sixth place for VeryChess 0.1.0. The new version also scored 4.5 out of 8 in their direct encounter. Based on the tournament results and additional internal testing, VeryChess 0.2.0 running on four threads is estimated to be approximately 100 Elo points stronger than the previous single-threaded version. Four-thread search also allows the engine to reach roughly one additional ply of search depth under the same time conditions.
